In your view, what was Will’s intention going into the coaching session?
It is difficult to assess intention from a person’s statements. In this case, Will stated and demonstrated that he was interested in helping Scott develop his expertise and advance his career.
What observations did Will share at the start of the coaching session?
Will was complimentary of Scott at the start of the session and eventually offered the observation, “I’m not sure people see you as an expert in your sector yet.”
What is the stated goal of the session?
Will set a clear and positive goal for the session. The goal of the session was to help Scott “get to the next level,” that is, advance in the organization. In order to do that, Will pointed out that Scott needs to become an expert in his sector.
What questions did Will use to explore the reality of the situation with Scott?
Will asked a few questions about the actions that Scott is taking to build his knowledge of his sector—T and T (telecom and technology). Will did a good job asking questions, using follow ups and “what else,” to advance Scott’s thinking. Still, Will could’ve used more open questions to broaden Scott’s thinking.
How would you characterize Will’s listening skills?
Will listened attentively and built on Scott’s ideas, saying “Well, you mentioned Helen. She’s the expert on semiconductor technologies. Why not start there?” Occasionally Will seems a little impatient or aggressive in the conversation but he shows genuine interest in helping Scott.
What options or action experiments did Will and Scott discuss?
Will and Scott discussed the possibility of Scott consulting with experts in the office and reading industry publications to build his knowledge.
What’s your assessment of their next steps or way forward?
Will and Scott agreed on action experiments but did not plan to follow up. To make the conversation even better, Will might’ve scheduled time with Scott to discuss the results of the experiment.
