All but one of the instructors in this study had taught in the human anatomy laboratory for at least 10 years. These instructors appear to be insensate to the effects of FA such that, even when they incur a headache, or eye/nasal/throat irritation in the laboratory environment, they
do not report these events as “irritating.” This group of study participants is thus most at
risk for chronic over exposure to FA and may have an increased risk to related health
issues, such as respiratory problems Mirabelli and colleagues60 reported a similar desensitization among pig farmers in 2006. Research has shown that residing, working, or attending school in close proximity to swine farms has been found to have a negative impact on respiratory health.60 Regardless of this fact, the farmers will report no negative sensory responses to the odors (created by their livelihood) that their neighbors find intolerable.60 Faculty members who spend years teaching in the anatomy laboratory and who are not bothered by chemical odors in their work environment are an at-risk group for health problems and require protection from chronic over exposure to FA
