This month sees one of Thailand’s most interesting cultural events take you back in time to the reign of King Narai and the Ayutthaya period (1565-1688). The King Narai Reign Fair will be held at his former palace in Lopburi province on February 15-23. Decorated with beautiful lights, the ancient citadel will take on a retro air thanks to the locals donning traditional Thai outfits and taking part in various cultural performances. You can also get dressed in authentic garb, which will be available for sale at the event. This year, there promises to be Ayutthaya-style parades with elephants and horses, light and sound shows at the palace and other quirky performances simulating the historical events that took place during the king’s reign. Other highlights will include a human chess display, monkey shows, and a retro market, which will accept only the Duang currency—the ancient coins used in the Ayutthaya period. Free entry.
