It will shed light on the motivations behind the Chinese government’s
promotion of Chinese culture and language. It addresses the following questions:
Does the Confucius Institute operate along lines which further the Chinese
government’s hegemonic policy and if so, how? What messages, ideas and norms are
being disseminated in Thailand? These questions will also be answered by applying
the conceptual framework of hegemony, which is defined as dominance which rests
on generally based consent that is manifested in the acceptance of new ideas.
Hegemony is also established by social forces occupying a dominant role within a
state that is then projected globally.
