Shizuko Greenblatt

A creative practice is inseparably bound up with Shizuko Greenblatt’s way of life. A master of ikebana, Japanese flower arrangement, she teaches and shapes aesthetics to express simplicity, clarity and natural beauty. As she approaches abstraction to develop wall art, she draws upon a family heritage of traditional Japanese arts, comfortably folding together cultural inheritance with a capacity to set aside formality in pursuit of a personal art form. Her work with wood, branches, paint and lattice hover above the wall surfaces, adding a layer of shadow and interface that changes with the condition of the room’s lighting. Her paintings combine the drawing gestures of the character, and the meaning of the character, with an abstraction into color and form.
That the artist employs various elements at hand to shape her expressions is very natural at its root. Traditional flower arrangement, a contemplative practice as much as a practical aesthetic craft, is by its nature a use of line and color, shape and density to balance the fruits and blooms of the field. The practice is something of a combination of the raw materials we value from the natural world, and a display of mental acuity and sensitivity that constitutes the flowering of the human mind.
Calligraphy, the other traditional art that influences the artist, has a similar fusion, of the physicality of the individual drawing the character, and how it visually combines the meaning that the character carries. Greenblatt’s family name, Akita, has a long connection with calligraphy, ranging back to the 1500’s. There is more to the influence than a practice of materials and skill… the essence of an art form that has helped shape her DNA is a source of fascination to her, and is largely responsible for her series of paintings that employ calligraphy. She points out that the influence is so present for her, even the mixed media assemblage pieces, colorful lattices interspersed with the organic crooks and creases of a bit of tree branch, she can see how the branch becomes like a written character.
Writing contains within it a story about the education of the writer. Penmanship shows something of a person’s character. Like essentially anything in life, learning the basics of a process is one thing, using them expressively is yet another. The artist remembers sitting with the family, her grandfather and parents award winning calligraphers all, and comparing the traditional hand-written New Year’s cards, holding little critique sessions to weigh the strokes of brush and ink.
With creative refinement as such an integrated part of her upbringing, she didn’t require validation in the form of studying art, quite content with tutors and her own drive, she studied English and Sociology at UCLA instead. She felt that any career she pursued would have as its result work that was useful and inspirational. She is pleasantly resigned to it – she was simply born that way, a matter of personality. She found a kind-hearted husband and avid volunteer whose character has influenced her a great deal. She maintained this approach in her art, through ten years studying with Vicky Dolnick, a student of Richard Diebenkorn.
Greenblatt describes her experience of creativity as one of non-separation, none between the art forms, and part of every-day family life. She does not believe artists are any kind of special person that sees the world differently, rather it’s a matter of setting priorities, being in good surroundings, and staying alert. She maintains varied forms of outlet to maintain this sense of freshness, each with many years of practice. There is a freedom that comes from not being overspecialized, an array that keeps the mind from being stuck in a rut. This proved vital in keeping her children engaged while they were small, and remains in her work as a designer, in her friendships among her choral singing group Mori Nokai (Forest Group), and eight years of figure drawing. In her recent exploration of painting and sculpture, she’s been considering this inseparability between the art forms, and material technique. The focus on seeing has led her to this new hard-edge experimenting in her work. She loves the fact that she can face fresh new challenges in her work, simply by adjusting her attention.
