Following is two lists of salutations - one to a man and the other to a woman. Both lists begin with the most formal and descend to the least formal.
To a man
"sir is Used in writing to persons in hing government position and not in ordinary business letters. The most commonly used salutation for a business letter is " Dear Mr. (last name)"
When writing to a firm or an organization, The appropriate salutation is "Gentlemen" (For U.S.A) and Dear Sir, (for Britain.) If you are sure you are writing to woman, use "Ladies"(For U.S.A.) and "Mesdames"(for Britain)
Note : Notice that for the American style a colon is used after the salutation. But if you are on Friendly terms with the person you are writing to, then use "Dear" Follนwed by the first name (ie. Dear Prasert ,)and use a comma after the salutation. However, a comma is always used after the salutation for the British style.
