Besides improving energy efficiency and developing renewable energy, MFU has committed to climate change mitigation and adaptation in other areas such as waste management and transport. Meeting rooms are fully equipped for video conference in order to reduce travelling. The university has ensured that it practices what is said in its environmental policy and beyond. The university’s nursery provides seedlings not only for the reforestation on the campus but also distributes them to staff and students for free. An example can even be found in dressing codes. Students and staff are also encouraged to wear northern Thai or “Lanna” customs that fit well with the local climate of Chiang Rai in particular on Friday.
The university also readied for pertinent climate threats in the area.
- Flash flood and land slide prevention. The drainage system is designed to prevent flash flood. In addition, the university has participated in the Royal Projectto grow and distribute some 20,000 seedlings of vetiver grass for land slide prevention.
- Forest fire and smog. The extended drought and human activities have increased the risk of forest fire during the dry season. This has contributed to the worsening condition of smog in the region in the recent years. To protect the forest, the university has the Forest Fire Monitoring Project. Every year the staff of the Building Division receive training and make necessary arrangements to prevent and control forest fire such as patrols, watch guards, clearing firebreaks, etc.
