These are just a few of the main reasons why films and books will never be able to replace the other. They do not serve the same purpose as each other. And most of all, they aren't meant to.
In either case, if you truly care for the arts, you should be aware that both authors and movie makers struggle to create. No matter how mediocre you eventually deem their outcome, each creator had spent a chunk of their lives in hopes of engaging you; the audience.
In my own experiences as both a starting film maker and writer; the question is less about which is better (books or movies), but about what you as a audience get out of experiencing any art form.
It also helps if you are discerning about what you read or watch. Because if you read books that aren't written with much skill or craft or insight, you might get just as much enlightenment from a low budget film with no plot and bad direction.
And how do you gauge what's good art from bad? That's another question all its own and has sparked philosophers to write volumes about defining it.
