Dried seeds packed in moisture impervious laminated
pouches maintained around 70% germination up to 12 months
of storage, which is also comparable with that of black
polythene pouches (Table 2). Except the cotton cloth bags,
more than 60% germination was recorded in seeds stored in
different packaging materials up to 12 months of storage. Onion seeds stored in moisture impervious containers like polyethylene
and laminated pouches exhibited a gradual decline in
germinability. Similarly, the decline in seedling vigour was
relatively lower in impervious containers compared to others.
Average germination (0–21 months) was lower with cotton
cloth bags (54%) and aluminum boxes (57%). Packaging
container and storage duration significantly affected viability
and seedling vigour.
