The first difference between Thais and Germans would be the way of greeting. For Thais they will perform a “wai” when greeting each other. But for Germans shaking hand will take place when greeting. Germans people are known to be very formal and normally address colleagues whom they have known for years with their last names. On the other hand, Thais are quite open and friendly and generally call their colleagues by their first name or nickname. Pointing or the using of index finger is widely use in Germany and it is normal, however, in Thailand it would be considered rude and impolite. Due to this fact, conflict could occur in the case where a German point at a Thai faces while talking or asking something. Consequently, this could upset the Thai and end up ruining the relationship. Also, it is still quite conservative when it comes to communication across genders, men don’t touch women, unless it is really necessary, meanwhile, in Germany it is common to greet each other by shaking hands, hugging or patting the back. Accordingly, this could bring out a misunderstanding when Germans come to Thailand and a guy offer a hand shake to a Thai woman to greet and it turns out he didn’t receive a hand shake back, without knowing the communication style and culture the action could be interpreted as rude or unfriendly.
