Our modified SIA method, however, needs to be adapted in practice
to address challenges such as: the limited local human, financial and in country
resources and capacity available; the need for more appropriate
social impact indicators and monitoring mechanisms in this context;
implementation difficulties, especially in the absence of external
assistance; the lack of familiarity of tourism businesses with SIA
technical terminology and methods; and the lack of convincing
evidence and a clear business case for investing in socially-responsible
behaviour during an economic recession. Further adaptations need to
be made to our method for it to more effectively involve and build the
capacity of staff in the identification of the SIMP and its on-going
implementation.
