Summary
This book goes about a boy how’s name is Tom Doggett. He is 17 years old. He lives in Liverpool. His father wanted him to work in an office. But Tom loved horses en wanted to be a jockey. His father didn’t understand that. So he left home. First he took a bus from the centre of town en then he walked. Soon he reached the motorway. He didn’t have enough money to go by train so he decided to wait and hope to get a lift in a car. He waited an half hour en then finally somebody stopped. First Tom didn’t knew if the driver only wanted to ask him the way. But then the man opened the door and said :,,Get in’’, very cheerfully. Tom got in. In the back of the car there was sitting a girl. She had blond hair. Was she his daughter? Tom didn’t knew.



When they were driving the driver asked Tom a lot of questions. Tom didn’t like it, but didn’t want to be rude. So he replied all the questions. So, the driver found out that Tom wanted to be a jockey and that he was on his way to London. The driver told Tom that he used to own racehorses by himself. And that his name was Masters. He also told him that the name of the girl was: Shirley. After an half hour Masters said: ,, Why don’t you stay with us for a wile? It takes a lot of time to become a good jockey. And you will need money. I could give you a job, if you want?’’ Masters was right. Tom didn’t have enough money. And he liked Masters and Shirley, so he said:,, Yes, thank you!’’

When they arrived at Masters house, Shirley showed Tom his room. After that Tom went to Masters and asked him about the job, and what it was. Masters only told him that he was getting 200 pounds. Tom wanted to ask further, but Masters told him that it was already late and that it would be better if he first went to bed. And that’s what Tom did.

The next day, Shirley went to Tom and asked him if he would like it to go to the swimming pool. Tom, really liked Shirley and said:,, Yes, sure’’. After they had swim for a wile Shirley kissed Tom. He felt very happy. So, she liked him as well. When they got back to the house Masters told Tom that they were going to eat. But.. Shirley didn’t enjoy them. So, Tom asked: ,, Isn’t Shirley going to enjoy us?’’. ,,No, she’s got a lot to do.’’ That was strange.. Was she his servant-girl? Tom didn’t knew. But was very tired and went upstairs.

The next day Masters en Tom went to the place were Tom had to do the job. First they had been in the car for two hours. Then they got on a boat and went on the water. Masters showed him an given ship. He told him that the ship sank a month ago. And that a bag with diamonds was still in it. It belongs to Masters. Tom had to dive the bag up. Then he could get his 200 pounds. ,, But I never dived before’’, said Tom a bit afraid. ,,Don’t worry, Shirley will teach you. I’ll give you a scuba suit.

After a few days practising, the big day arrived. Tom had to dive. He wasn’t nervous at all. He knew he could do it.

When they were at the place where they had to dive, there was another man. His name was Clark, told Masters. He was going to help them, he was going to stay in the boat. When they had there scuba suits on they got into the water. Tom got into the boat whereas Masters waited by the entrance. But Tom couldn’t find the bag! He was in panic! What now! He couldn’t got back without a bag!! Masters would be very angry. And he wasn’t going to get his 200 pounds. He decided to look further. But he didn’t knew if he would have enough air. After a few minutes he found the bag. He opened it but the only thing what came out was some with powder. Now, He realised that his air was running out. Tom had to go! He swam as fast as he could! He got out of the ship! Sudden he saw bubbles. Tom didn’t knew where they were coming from. Then he remembered Masters. He was waiting for him.
Masters’ air tube was caught round the metal. Then Masters stopped moving. He was drowning! Tom took of his belts and then his own. He swam up. Clark pulled Masters into the boat. After a wile Clark man said: ,,He’s dead.’’ Clark asked: ,,Did you find the bag?’’ ,,Yes, but there was only white powder in it’. Clark didn’t say anything. ,, What was in the bag?’’, Tom asked. ,,Drugs of course’’, he replied. Now Tom understands it. Masters didn’t want him to know that it was drugs. So he told Tom that they were diamonds. ,,Now Shirley has to find another job’’, said Tom. ,,Yes, but she’s never going to find a new dad, is she?’’, said Clark. ,,What?’’.,, Oo.. didn’t you know that Shirley was his daughter?’’. I was surprised.. Shirley his daughter..

When they arrived at the water side there was Shirley. When she saw he father she’d got tears in here eyes. ,,I’m sorry, very sorry’’, said Clark.

At the end Shirley and Tom decided not to tell the police about all this. They were going to live somewhere else, and start over again.
