YANGON: Myanmar's Parliamentary chairman Shwe Mann from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) on Monday (Nov 9) conceded defeat in the elections.
He is the first high-profile casualty of Myanmar's landmark elections.
Mr Shwe Mann, who was running in the Bago region's Phyu township, issued a statement on Facebook congratulating his rival from the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD).
However, his defeat does not mean he is entirely out of the game as opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi needs a President if her party wins the elections and can appoint him.
USDP chief Htay Oo said his party had lost in the whole Irrawaddy Delta region against its main rival NLD, according to the 7 Day Daily newspaper.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who arrived at the NLD headquarters, said: "It's too early to speak about the result. Although I can't speak about the result, I know our people will understand it."
She added: "I'll only congratulate our candidates when they can meet our people's needs. So far the result isn't confirmed yet."
However, her party said its candidates are on course to claim more than 70 percent of the seats, a gain that could bring a major power shift from the military.
"We are winning more than 70 percent of seats around the country, but the election commission has not officially confirmed yet," National League for Democracy party spokesman Win Htein told AFP.
In Mandalay, NLD spokesman said so far there has been a big margin between NLD and USDP votes in the region.
In Rakhine, several local media reports said that Arakan National Party chairman Aye Maung has lost in Rakhine, but there were mixed ANP results across state. They reported big wins for the ANP in northern Rakhine, including Mrauk-U, an ancient city that President Thein Sein visited before the elections.
Some official results are expected to be announced in the afternoon in Yangon. However, the Union Election Commission said the results would only be announced from 6pm Myanmar time (7.30pm Singapore time).
