MacKinnon et al. (1993) found brine unsuccessful in removing sea stars
from mussel collectors (). However, this may have been a question of whether or
not the solution was strong enough to cause osmotic stress to the sea stars.
Mussel spat collectors were placed in a 17 g/liter solution for 60 seconds.
Shearer and MacKenzie (1961) looked at the effects of salt solutions of different
strengths on sea stars and found that sea stars did not die in less than 50 per
cent saturated solution when submerged for 15 minutes.
