It is not our intent to review the evolution of instrumental thin-layer chromatography, which is available in a series of books and reviews that summarize the main breakthroughs in an his-torical context [1–10]. Thin-layer chromatography continues toevolve driven by advances in separation media and instrumenta-tion. To take advantage of the capabilities of fine-particle layers thedevelopment of instrumental approaches became essential, as intheir absence, performance would be compromised, reproducibil-ity questioned, and quantification rendered unreliable.
