Macrocyclic lactones (MLs) have both adulticidal and
larvicidal activity in the treatment of canine filarial diseases
(McCall et al., 2008) and, in turn, injectable and oral formulations
of moxidectin exerted a preventive activity against
D. repens (Rossi et al., 2002, 2004; Genchi et al., 2010).
This compound is also present in an antiparasitic spot-on
formulation containing imidacloprid 10%/moxidectin 2.5%
(Advocate®, Bayer Animal Health), which is licensed for
the treatment of different ecto- and endo-parasitosis of the
dog. The dermal application of Advocate® is safe and effective
in dogs infected by D. immitis (Arther et al., 2005a,b;
Venco et al., 2008) and, recently, it has been demonstrated
that amonthly treatment with this spot-on formulation for
up to six months can be used for the microfilaricidal treatment
of natural canine infection by D. repens (Fok et al.,
2010). Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to
evaluate the efficacy and safety of a single dermal application
of Advocate® in the elimination of D. repens MF in
naturally infected dogs.
