All considered, time-course studies are needed to elucidate basic
aspects of the biology of disease, to determine the maximum virus
load in shrimp that can be safe in commercial ponds. Field studies are
thought to provide more reliable information on how viruses behave;
to confirm whether a viral load of 103copies/ng DNA in shrimp can
trigger an outbreak of WSSV disease that can, in turn, lead to the
collapse of the shrimp farm industry, further short-term periodic
monitoring will need to be conducted.
