Overview
The speaker will explore the prospects for nuclear power and argue that its use will continue to grow in spite of the Fukushima accident. He will discuss the application of nuclear energy in fields that are fundamental to human well-being such as health, water management and food security, as well as the role of the IAEA in assisting developing countries to build their capacity for its safe and secure application.
He will outline the IAEA’s approach to supporting global nuclear non-proliferation, including nuclear safeguards and verification and the significant issues relating to safeguards in Iran and North Korea. The IAEA’s role in nuclear security and the nuclear security summit process will also be considered.
