The role of community health nurses in early detection
of breast cancer.
The focus of community health nursing is promoting and
preserving the health of populations. This goal is achieved
through health promotion, health maintenance, health
education and management. The issue of early detection
of breast cancer will require all the identified tools i.e. health
promotion, health maintenance, health education and
management in order to ensure early treatment. It is very
important that the community health nurse relate well within
the community, such that she will be able to spur on the
community all the identified tools for early detection of
breast cancer. For community health nursing to effectively
contribute to early detection of breast cancer, the
educational preparation of community health nurses must
be adequate in the area of oncology and specifically breast
cancer. The current educational curriculum of the general
nursing education both at the basic level and university
level is deficient in the knowledge of oncology. This must
be incorporated at both levels as well as at the specialty
training for community health nurses.
