Coral polyps. (a) A few corals, like the mushroom coral (Fungia ) fromthe Indo-West Pacific, consist of a single polyp.Most are colonies of many individual polyps. (b) In some of these, like the large-cuppedboulder coral ( Montastrea cavernosa ) from theCaribbean, each polyp has its own individualcup, called a corallite. (c ) In coral colonies likethe brain coral (Diploria ) from the Caribbean,meandering lines of polyps lie in a commoncorallite.
