There are a number of events in Act Five that can be linked to Fate – Friar John doesn't deliver the letter, Romeo learns that Juliet is “dead,” the Apothecary doesn't want to sell the poison but he does. Every action steers the 'star cross'd lovers' to their fateful end. Although, here is an interesting question about Fate in this act: In the end, the only actions Romeo and Juliet have complete control over is whether or not they kill themselves. Each chooses to do so. In trying to defy fate (they kill themselves to be together in the afterlife) they fulfil fate. Which makes me ask, why is death the fulfilment of fate? Their death ends the feud, suggesting that ending the family feud is more important than Romeo and Juliet's love.
