The challenge of providing sufficient staff support was also faced by the project team. Although two of the project team staff nurses were from each of the units, an additional point person was needed for the postsurgical trauma unit to support the daily tasks of identifying patients, understanding the QI procedures, answering questions, and following up to assure completion of questionnaires. The rehabilitation unit had one project staff member to support between 15 and 17 staff nurses. The postsurgical trauma unit required a minimum of three support staff to support 75 staff nurses. The unit’s fast-paced environment coupled with high patient acuity also created difficulties for the bedside nurses to complete tasks outside of standard care needs. Project team members often required daily follow-up With the bedside nurse to ensure that project procedures were completed.
