Changesintheseasonalconcentrationsofheavymetals(Cu,Mn,Fe,Zn,PbandCd)weredeterminedin
water, sediments,snails(Pomaceacanaliculata) andaquaticplants(Ipomoeaaquatica) inthreeselected
tributariesoftheBeungBoraphetreservoir,NakhonSawanProvince,centralThailand.OnlyFe,Cu,Mn
and ZnweredetectedbyFAASinallsamplescollected.ThewaterqualityofBeungBoraphetwas
mediumcleanwithFe,Mn,CuandZnconcentrationswellbelowinternationallyacceptedlimits.
AccordingtothecriteriaproposedforsedimentsbytheEPARegionV,ZnandMnconcentrationswere
withinthenon-pollutedrangewhileFeandCu(wetseason)concentrationsfellintotheclassof
severely pollutedsediment.Both P. canaliculata and I. aquatica bioconcentratedmoreMnintheir
tissues thanwerefoundinsediments,especiallyinthewetseason.TheresultsofPearsoncorrelation
studyandBCFvaluesalsoindicatedsimilarfindings.OnlyMnshowedtheimportanceofsediment-to-
snail concentrationandhighBCFvaluesinbothsnailsandplants. P. canaliculata exposedto
contaminatedsedimentfortwomonths,showedhigheraccumulationofmetals(Fe,Mn,CuandZn)
in thedigestivetractsanddigestiveglandsthaninthefootmuscles.Histopathologicalchangesincluded
alterationsintheepithelialliningofthedigestivetracts,digestiveglandsandthegills.Lossofciliaand
increaseinmucouscellswereobservedinthedigestivetractsandgills,whilethedigestiveglands
exhibitedanincreaseofdarkgranulesandbasophiliccells,anddilationofdigestivecells.Theresults
indicatedthatboth P. canaliculata and I. aquatica could beusedasbiomonitorsofsedimentarymetal
contaminationfortheBeungBoraphetreservoir.
