Postoperative effect of music listening hasnot been established in pediatric age. Responseon postoperative distress and pain in pediatricday care surgery has been evaluated. Forty-twochildren were enrolled. Patients were randomlyassigned to the music-group (music interventionduring awakening period) or the non-musicgroup (standard postoperative care). Slow andfast classical music and pauses were recordedand played via ambient speakers. Heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, glucose andcortisol levels, faces pain scale and Face, Legs,Activity, Cry, Consolability (FLACC) Pain Scalewere considered as indicators of response tostress and pain experience. Music during awakeninginduced lower increase of systolic anddiastolic blood pressure levels. The non-musicgroup showed progressive increasing values ofglycemia; in music-group the curve of glycemiapresented a plateau pattern (P<0.001). Positiveimpact on reactions to pain was noted using theFLACC scale. Music improves cardiovascularparameters, stress-induced hyperglycemia.Amelioration on pain perception is more evidentin older children. Positive effects seems to beachieved by the alternation of fast, slow rhythmsand pauses even in pediatric age.Introduction
