of TPSB in the PLA/TPSB blends (Table 1). The decease in TC with
higher amounts of TPSB may be explained by a nucleating effect of
TPSB on PLA crystallization. Similar observations were reported in
other studies of TPS blends with PLA (Martin and Avérous, 2001;
Acioli-Moura and Sun, 2008; Li and Huneault, 2008). Plasticizers
like water and glycerol also could potentially migrate into the PLA
matrix causing an increase in PLA polymer chain mobility thus
increasing the crystallization rate of PLA (Li and Huneault, 2008,
2011b).
The TPS sample made from cassava starch (TPSI) had a similar
but smaller effect on TC (Table 1). The greater relative effect of
TPSB on TC is most likely due to the presence of cellulosic fibers contained
in the cassava bagasse and their greater effect on nucleation.
Mathew et al. (2006) showed that cellulose fibers, microcrystalline
cellulose, and wood flour had nucleating effect on PLA when
incorporated as a blend. The presence of microfibrillated cellulose
has also been reported to accelerate PLA crystallization
(Suryanegara et al., 2009). During the cooling scan the thermograms
did not exhibit a crystallization peak which is consistent with a slow
rate of PLA crystallization.
