Introduction paragraph. Tell me a little about your story in the beginning. Start with a good first sentence that tells me what the book is about. We always talk about "Titanic" in class. What's it about? (It's a tragic love story set on the ship Titanic). After the first sentence, tell me a little more. (The main characters are Jack, a poor young man, and Rose, a rich young woman.) You can introduce the main characters in this paragraph and tell me a little about the story. Here are some examples of first sentences:
a. "The Makioka Sisters" by Junichiro Tanizaki is about a wealthy Japanese family in Osaka in the 1930s.
b. "The Bridge on the Drina" by Ivo Andric is about the history of a bridge in Serbia, and the people who live around it.
c. "Harry Potter" by J. K. Rowling is the story of a boy wizard and his adventures.
2) Next paragraphs. In these paragraphs tell me about the beginning of your story, what happened next, what happened after that. (For example: Jack won two tickets on the Titanic in a card game. He boarded the ship with his friend, and they stayed in Third Class compartments with the poor people. Rose got on the ship with her mother and her fiance. They stayed in First Class, with the rich.). Think of it like A-B-C-D... Z. First (A) Jack won the tickets. Then (B) Jack and Rose got on the ship. Next (C)....
3) Last two paragraphs:
a. Tell me about the ending of the story. ("In the end..." or "Finally...")
b. Tell me what you thought about it. ("I really liked 'The Makioka Sisters.' It was very interesting, and I learned a lot about Japanese history and culture. I also liked the characters a lot. My favorite character was.... because...." or "I didn't like this book. I thought it was boring and that the characters were stupid. I hated...").
