Buffer and exclusion zones
Identify the appropriate width of buffer and exclusion zones for aquatic and archaeological features
within or adjoining the coupe. The minimum buffer zone for aquatic zones is usually 10 m; the
minimum exclusion zone for archaeological sites is usually 15 m. These may need to be increased
following discussion with the Regional Fisheries Board, Local Authority or the National Monuments
and Historic Properties Service of Dúchas The Heritage Service, depending on the sensitivity
involved. In general, all forestry operations are prohibited from these areas. Trees, if present (due to
the absence of guidelines at the time of planting), should be removed from these areas at thinning
and final harvesting. This operation must be carried out with extreme care.
