2The different classroom and school contexts described in the previous chapter played
a role in the teachers’ task selection process. The school district where Dinah and Deb teach
does not support the use of standards-based curriculum material. Although they did have an
old selected curriculum material (Math Central), the teachers are given professional
autonomy to select tasks and activities from different resources so long as those activities
will meet the learning needs of their students. They did not strictly follow the activities and
tasks in the textbook, and, in most cases, referred to them only when they needed some
questions to give the students.
