The Provincial Electricity Authority entered the league system through Division 1, and gained promotion to the top flight in 2003/04. Since 2004, they’ve been an ever-present in the Thai Premier League, though they’ve undergone metamorphoses. Originally based in Bangkok the club moved to Ayutthaya in 2008, & won the title. After the 2009 season, they were taken over by politician Newin Chidchob, who was allowed to move the club to his home province of Buriram, despite fan opposition in Ayutthaya. The newly-christened Buriram-PEA joined the new breed of
professional club in Thailand, with a new purpose-built stadium, club shop, academy & active efforts to engage fans. They became the first club to claim the domestic treble in 2011. At the end of the season, they became Buriram United after buying out PEA’s share, and then merging with Division 1 champions Buriram FC, who had been controversially been operated as a ‘sister’ club since 2010.
