The role of the network designer
The role of the network designer is to translate a client specification (a definition of what they want) into a technical design that can be realised and that will achieve what the client desires.
To do this a designer must firstly ensure that the client’s specification is as complete as possible and accurate. To achieve this, it may be necessary to enter a lengthy dialogue with the client until both are content that the specification is as complete as it can be.
Thereafter the designer must use their experience and knowledge of available products to determine the best design that can meet the client’s requirements within their budget constraints. Once a design is produced, it must be tested against the original specification. This could be accomplished through modelling or computer simulation. Once the design is finalised then an implementation schedule must be organised and construction commenced.
Once installed, the network will need to be commissioned and tested against the original specification before final ‘sign-off’ and acceptance by the client. It is only at this final stage of acceptance by the client, that the design process is truly complete.
