When examining the information sources that international tourists may turn to for information in the event of a crisis during travel, overall, social media ranked as the fifth most preferred crisis information source (μ = 3.21), behind local law enforcement office/police (μ = 3.40), friends/relatives (μ = 3.27), Internet (μ = 3.24), and hotel concierge (μ = 3.22) (Table 3). Overall, the least preferred crisis information source was radio (μ = 2.45). Further, differences were found in the preferred crisis information sources among the different countries of origin. The top preferred crisis information sources among travelers from India were social media (μ = 2.99) and the local tourism office (μ = 2.99), compared to text messages among Brazilian travelers (μ = 3.51). On the other hand, local law enforcement office/police were the preferred crisis information source among Chinese (μ = 3.78), South Korean (μ = 3.77), and Australian (μ = 3.42) travelers. Also, focusing on social media, it was found that travelers from South Korea (μ = 3.52) were the most likely to turn to social media in the event of a crisis during travel, while travelers from India (μ = 2.99) were the least likely to turn to social media during a crisis.
