6. Vegetation of landscapes
surrounding the study sites
The results suggested that
PD had more forest area, less urban
and agriculture and fewer degraded
areas than BMSM (Table 2). Total
forest area around PD was
approximately 80% while BMSM had
approximately 60%. BMSM was more
fragmented than PD and their fragmentation
indexes were 0.004 and 0.002 respectively.
All plots were located in degraded or
regenerating areas but plot 3 was located at
the edge of a deciduous forest and next to
agriculture fields, and this plot was covered
mostly by bamboo. The plots at BMSM
were further from forest than plots at PD.
Plot 8 had the greatest distance to forest
(480 m) while plot 7 was 148 m from the
nearest forest patch. Plots 1 and 2 were
located on degraded and regenerating areas
surrounded by agricultural fields and
abandoned fields but the distance to forest
edge was 24 and 58 m, respectively. The
forest near plots 1 and 2 was mostly bamboo
and deciduous forest. Plots 4, 5 and 6 were located on plantation plots and surrounded by agricultural
fields and abandoned fields, and the distance to forest was 214, 442 and 126 meters respectively.
