These results suggest that microorganisms in D1 had to hydrolyze large quantities of particulate matter to obtain nutrients. In contrast, bacteria in D2 had plenty of nutrients because of the large amounts of carbohydrates provided by the GLY and therefore did not need to hydrolyze large amounts of particulate matter.
