The exact opposite situation occurs when an employee is told to not work a
certain process step if there is work from another process step or value stream
still demanding her attention. When this occurs, you should take the discussion
further and try to understand the normal amount of time available to work the
process step being mapped. From this, you should then explore the situation to
the point that there is agreement on what percentage of the time work shows up
and is not processed due to the other value stream’s interruption. From this, it is
then possible for you to multiply the available time by the percentage of interruption.
The resulting percentage is the AOP
