The BC3 parents were crossed with the non-transgenic
lines to generate six F1 hybrids, which are numbered as
hybrids 1–6. The six transgenic hybrids along with two
commercial hybrids (Raja and SS1534) and two noncommercial
hybrids (hybrid 7 and 8) were tested. The
non-commercial hybrids were developed with the nontransgenic
tomato lines used in the formation of Bt
hybrids. The hybrids were transplanted on March 8,
1999 in a two-row plot in a completely randomized
block design with two replications. The plants were
infested with H. armigera larvae and were evaluated for
insect damage, as explained above.
