An environmental group, The New York Water Environment Association, released a report in May 2011 listing questions that New York wastewater treatment plants should ask before they accept any drilling wastewater. The list includes
whether treating the water at the plant would conform to their existing permit conditions, what exactly are the chemicals and concentrations in the wastewater the plants would be treating, whether the water can be adequately treated at the plant,
and whether the volume of water required can be treated at the plant.
