There is little evidence in the literature
on the use of compression during an acute
episode of cellulitis; individual presentations
and patients’ medical history need to
form part of the decision. Swelling caused
by infection increases pressure in the tissues
and leads to higher pressures than
normal under compression. This could
impair circulation, leading to tissue
necrosis and/or distal ischaemia, especially
where tissue oxygenation has been
borderline under compression.
