This study investigated the incidence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in patients with a diagnosis of cerebrovascular accident (CVA). A review of the medical records of CVA patients on an acute care unit was conducted at a hospital in western New York. The records were analyzed to determine if the patients were receiving prophylactic intervention during their acute care hospital stay. The relationship between time of prophylactic onset and formation of DVT was then examined. The data analysis revealed that of the 17 subjects included in the study, none were found to have developed a DVT. Therefore, it can not be concluded that there is a significant relationship between the time of prophylactic onset and the development of DVT in patients with a primary diagnosis of CVA and a lack of active mobility in the involved lower extremity.
