This
study also stated that the higher the initial concentration of VFA
the higher the accumulation of lipids. In a two-stage fed-batch fermentation
strategy, Y. lipolytica MUCL 28849 was initially grown
on glucose or glycerol and subsequently VFA were added under
nitrogen limitation and after glucose or glycerol exhaustion. Results
showed that the use of glucose and a mixture of VFA provided
the best concentration of biomass (41.02 g/l) and lipids (16.5 g/l).
Furthermore, when glycerol was used, similar results were
achieved, thus demonstrating the suitability of these cheap industrial
by-products
