Artie Mae, who had expected the worst, was surprised to find that Manuel was a delightful child. He had a fantastic imagination, and the other children were drawn to him. One day, he taught the group how to make paper air-planes, and they pretended to put on an air show. On another day, he organ-ized a “safari” on the playground. Some children climbed on the jungle gym and pretended they were riding in a swamp buggy. Several others pretended to be wild animals and raced around the playground screeching, roaring, and growling. “Manuel is delightful,” Artie Mae told his parents. “Just about every day, he comes up with a creative idea.”
