Yet, as du Toit himself acknowledges, there may be more possibilities
implicit in this vast and contradictory system of distribution than we have
yet been able to appreciate. Discourses of social justice and social solidarity,
as he points out, “can play an important role in forging frameworks for
understanding and dealing with poverty that are not so depoliticized and
limited,” while deeply rooted traditions of giving in the region “may have
significant and as yet untapped poÂ�litiÂ�cal potential” (du Toit 2012, 10).
