Quorum-sensing controls bioactivity in response to the
number of microbes through the production of autoinducers.
Recently, such a sensing system was demonstrated
to function in fungi such as Candida. The data presented in
this study are consistent with the concept of the quorumsensing.
In such a system, β-1,3-glucan might acted as
an autoinducer. In this study, the physiological function
of β-1,3-glucan in the fungi themselves has been clearly
demonstrated. This is a new field of interest for β-1,3-
glucan research.
