Binders and Raines [134] have reported a highyielding chemical process for the hydrolysis of cellulose and corn stover using 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([EMIM]Cl)
and obtained 90% yield of glucose from cellulose and 70e80% yield of sugars from untreated corn stover. Ion exchange chromatography allows the recovery of the ionic liquid and delivers sugar feedstocks that support the vigorous growth of ethanologenic
microbes.
