Activity:
This game is best played in pairs. All of the picture cards can be used with mixed ability differentiated pairs. Reduce the quantity of cards given if used by lower ability pupils place the stack of picture cards face down in the centre of the table.
Children take turns to take a card. They must decide whose picture is heaviest and whose is lightest. Encourage the children to use this key maths vocabulary. once all of the cards have been turned over, the children must order the cards from lightest to heavies. Encourage children to justify their choices to each other where possible. An adult can prompt with questions.
Are you happy with that Choice? Why? Why did you choose to put that picture there? What made you think that this object is heavier than that one?
For extension, challenge pupils to mix up their cards and order them heaviest to lightest while timing them.
