In 1994, the company began a joint venture with Daimler-Benz/Mercedes-Benz to manufacture Mercedes Benz passenger cars in India. Also that year Tata signed a joint venture agreement with Tata Holset Ltd., UK to manufacture turbochargers for th Cummins engines. India's first sports utility vehicle the Tata Safari, was launched in 1998 and its independently designed Indica V2 became the number one car in its segment in India in 2001. Also during 2001 Tata exited its joint venture with Daimler Chrysler and entered into a product agreement with UK-based MG Rover in 2002.
