4.8 Primary and secondary Growth in Plants Primary growth
1. The primary growth of a plant refers to elongation of its shoot and root. It is the growth that enables a plant to increase in height.
2. The tissues which bring about primary growth are the apical meristems, namely the shoot meristem and the root meristem.
3. At the shoot tip and root tip, there are three growth zones:
(a) Zone of cell division
(b) zone of cell elongation
(c) Zone of cell differentiation
