New PC Installation or Upgrade Checklist ...........................................................................................................................................................................................
Please complete the following tasks in order to ensure a smooth upgrade.
• Print this checklist.
• Take inventory of your data. The IT department strongly recommends that you never save files and
data to the local c: drive. Instead, you should save your files to the network drives, which are backed up on
a daily basis. If you have saved files to your local C: drive, then you will need to back up these files prior
to the upgrade. Data can move or get lost during an upgrade. For this reason, it is important to know
where data is stored on your computer, especially programs that do not save their data to common
locations such as the My Documents folder. The IT Department tries to advise users on what to save,
but cannot anticipate every file that will be needed. Therefore, we cannot be responsible for lost data. It is
impossible for us to anticipate what files will be lost given the vast array of programs that are used in our
community. We understand, though, that users may not realize what will be lost until they realize that
something does not work after an upgrade. If you are going to receive an upgrade, or your PC needs to be
re-imaged, we recommend that you start now and determine what you need to back up.
• Search your C: drive for common file types (which is not guaranteed to be conclusive):
o MS Word: (*.doc*), MS Excel (*.xl*), MS Powerpoint (*.pp*)
o Lexis: (if you have research saved on the C: drive)
o Westlaw: (if you have research saved on the C: drive)
o Favorites folder (Favorites in the path of My DocumentsFavorites)
o Acrobat: (*.pdf)
o Audio files: (*.mp3, *.wav)
o Video files: (*.avi, *.m4v, *.mov)
o Corel WordPerfect: (usually *.wpd) Corel Presentations;(*.wpg or *.shw)
Detailed search instructions can found by following the links below and are also attached
to this memo:
o Find a file or folder (Windows XP)
o Find a file or folder (Windows 7)
o List and description of popular file types
• Backup or copy needed files from your C: drive
• Copy a file or folder (Windows XP)
• Copy a file or folder (Windows 7)
• Ensure you have the installation files and license keys for software that you manage. If you have
programs that were not installed and/or not supported by the Law School IT department, then it is your
responsibility to have legally licensed copies, and the installation files to reinstall these programs after the
upgrade.
• Sign this checklist and please tape it to the side of your monitor.
UPGRADE AGREEMENT: I am certain that I have checked my hard drive and have all the data I need backed
up. Please go ahead and reinstall the Law School Custom Image, or install the new computer with a Law School
Image, whichever applies.
