This implies that the language teacher is not interested in the application of
linguistics or any other discipline; he is inten:sted in solving language teaching
problems. And he will look at any subject which can assist him in doing so. It also
implies that he will do so in a principled manner, so that his teaching can be
related to underlying principles. This is where the applied linguist comes in.
