3. Results and discussion
3.1. General
The supply of fatty acids, through human milk, is of utmost importance to ensure the optimum development of a newborn. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs), specifically arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), largely accumulate in brain and retina, especially during the last trimester of pregnancy and the first months of life (Innis, 2007).
