Ideally, efficient SCM is based on information flow and full visibility over the chain. However, particularly large companies use closed SCM models where the visibility is minimal, if existing at all. As an example, large operators such as Maersk use systems that best fit their needs as Fremont (2007) indicated. Still, for SMEs interoperable and visible chains are beneficial due to their limited resources. The goal is to provide increased visibility into the entire chain: from the availability of raw materials to the time the customer receives the goods (Kalakota and Robinson, 2000; Singh, 1996). During the last 20 years, this principle has been successfully applied in numerous industrial companies. Three main information types can be utilized in SCM (Ratliff and Nulty, 1997):
